We all know the soothing sound of running water. It can have a calming effect, reassuring us everything will be fine. It makes the sounds of waves, waterfalls, and rivers a popular meditation background. But why does it relax us to perceive the flow of water?
The reason why the sound of water can help you fall asleep
Our brain interprets sounds either as threats or non-threats. Depending on the character of the noise it can activate the threat-activated vigilance system 1 or not. Whereas running water is considered a non-threat, noises such as a shrill tone can indicate harm. The velocity of the intensity rise and fall of the sound is important here. Sounds as screams rise fast in intensity. They tell our brain: Hey wake up, there is a sudden sound, you might be in danger. Waves and the sounds of other running water don´t increase fast in intensity. They help you to tune out, and into sleep. 1
How does our psyche benefit from waterfalls?
Studies indicate that during the drop-down of water in waterfalls, negative ions are released. These ions increase the availability of oxygen to the brain and reduce anxiety and stress. This can help to diminish depression. 2 For this reason, the sound of running water is in discussion as an aidful recreation method for veterans with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). 3

Researchers assume that the perception of running water can impact also the neuronal wave rhythm in our brain favouring peaceful thoughts. 2
Positive impacts of living close to the water
Not only the sound of water can impact our relaxation level. BBC reported that “Living near a ‘blue space’ – such as the sea or open sky – can reduce stress levels and make us happier” (Lacey, 2013). 4 Wallace J. Nichols refers to this phenomenon in his book. He defines the term “blue mind” effect, to express the influence on health and our level of happiness while being close to water. The marine biologist explains it with our reaction to seeing water, which is genetically determined. According to him, our ancestors were calmed by the sight of water, because it secured their survival. We still depend on water as our source of survival so its sight or sound releases a calming reaction in our brains. 5
Conclusion
There are a few reasons why waterfalls can help us to relax. First of all, our brain interprets the sound of running water as non-threatening. It doesn´t signal any danger, so it can help us to fade away. Furthermore, negative ions released in waterfalls, reduce anxiety and stress. Not only the sound of water impacts us in a positive way. Water is a necessary source of survival, its sheer presence can have a calming effect on us. What do you think about it? Are you surprised by how water can have a positive influence on your psyche and how strong it might be?
